What is a Reverse Osmosis System?

Reverse osmosis systems are filtration systems that eliminate any water particles that are smaller than a molecule by forcing your tap water through a membrane. This membrane removes impurities such as salt, chlorine, and bacteria from the water as the water enters the system. The impurities are filtered out and flushed down the drain. What is left is clean water.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

A reverse osmosis (RO) system uses water pressure to push water through a special membrane. Clean water goes to a storage tank and faucet, while the leftover “reject” water carries away the trapped impurities.

It depends on the model and what it is certified to reduce. RO systems can be tested to reduce total dissolved solids and, for some systems, contaminants like lead, arsenic, VOCs, nitrate/nitrite, and more—when the unit is tested and certified for those claims.

Most systems need new pre-filters about every 6–12 months. The RO membrane often lasts around 2–3 years, depending on your water quality and how much water you use.

Yes. Many under-sink RO systems send several gallons down the drain for every gallon of filtered water. EPA notes a typical system can waste five gallons or more per gallon made, while WaterSense-labeled models are limited to 2.3 gallons or less per gallon produced.
